Abstract

This research article presents an analytical and critical study of the methodological harmony, contemporary relevance, and applied relationship between Hanafi Legal Theory (Usul al‑Fiqh al‑Ḥanafi) and the principles of Hadith (Usul al‑Hadith). In contemporary academic discourse, it is often claimed that a fundamental methodological conflict exists between the Hanafi jurists and the Hadith scholars, resulting in allegations that the Hanafis preferred analogy (qiyas) or juristic reasoning over Prophetic traditions. This study critically examines such assumptions and demonstrates that the foundational discussions of Hanafi legal theory are, in reality, a juristic and applied extension of Hadith principles themselves.

The article analytically examines major Hanafi legal-theoretical works including Usul al‑Sarakhsi, Usul al‑Bazdawi, Kashf al‑Asrar, Al‑Fuṣool fil‑Uṣul, Mezan ul‑Uṣul, and Al‑Talweeh Wa al‑Tawdeeh, while also engaging with classical and contemporary Hadith methodological sources such as ʿUloom ul‑Hadith, Al‑Kifayah, Sharḥ al‑Tirmidhi, and Fatḥ al‑Mughith. Particular attention has been given to the principles of khabar ul‑Wahid, communal practice (ta’amul ul‑ummah), conflict of narrations, legal preference (Tarjeeḥ), narration by meaning (Riwayat Bil Ma’ana), juristic competence of narrators, and ziyadat ul‑thiqqah within the framework of modern Hadith studies.

The study concludes that the differences between Hanafi jurists and Hadith. Scholars are not foundational but rather terminological, methodological, and interpretive in nature. Furthermore, several contemporary trends in Hadith studies—such as contextual interpretation, maqaṣid-based analysis, and holistic methodology show remarkable affinity with classical Hanafi Legal Theory.
