In human history, war and peace have always remained a great trial for civilizations and states. During times of peace, it is relatively easy to speak about human rights, justice, tolerance, and peaceful coexistence; however, the true standard emerges when a society passes through an environment of war, conflict, and fear. In such circumstances, many civilizations violate human values. In contrast, the Seerah of the Prophet ﷺ presents a unique and exalted moral model in which even war remains subject to justice, mercy, and human dignity, while peace is not merely the absence of conflict but is founded upon trust, agreements, and respect for humanity.
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ never used war as a means of revenge or display of power; rather, he adopted it as a limited and ethical measure for the elimination of oppression and the restoration of peace. Non-combatants, women, children, the elderly, worshippers, and civilian populations were always protected. Prisoners of war were treated with kindness, wounded enemies were not subjected to further cruelty, and after victory, general amnesty and forgiveness were preferred.
In the modern world, international laws such as the Geneva Conventions, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and the International Criminal Court legally embody these very principles. However, in practical reality, powerful states often ignore such principles. In contrast, the distinctive feature of the Prophetic model is that along with law, faith, morality, and consciousness of God are also integral elements, due to which both war and peace remain subject to human dignity.
This research article examines the principles of war and peace in the Seerah of the Prophet ﷺ and presents them in a comparative study with modern international human rights standards. The study concludes that the Seerah of the Prophet ﷺ still provides strong and practical guidance for global peace, human rights, and interfaith harmony.
