Abstract

In Islamic teachings, fasting is not merely the abstention from food and drink; rather, it is a practical discipline of renouncing all, and turning away from everything besides Him. During this sacred month, the sālik (spiritual seeker) adorns his outward being with adherence to the Sharīʿah (Divine Law), while illuminating his inner self through remembrance of Allāh, meditation, and spiritual striving. Fasting serves as an effective means to subdue Nafs al-Ammārah: the rebellious inclinations of the commanding self and to prepare the heart for the reception of the lights of divine gnosis. Thus, the Ṣufiyyah regard this month as a special opportunity to attain the stations of Ehsan, according to Ṣufiyyah, Ramadan is seen as a special season of nearness to God, wherein every moment is filled with mercy, forgiveness, and divine manifestations. People of the heart turn their entire attention away from worldly attachments and direct it toward the True Beloved, filling their hearts with sincerity, devotion, and love of and for Allāh. In their view: Ṣufiyyah, fasting is a spiritual journey that leads a person to the negation of the ego and the recognition of the Allāh (Ultimate Reality), in which lies true success. Thus, for the Ṣufiyyah, Ramadan becomes a spiritual garden wherein the servant strengthens his bond with the Lord with profound depth and sincere devotion.
