Sufi Dimensions of Seerah: A Specialized Study of Mirqāt al-Mafātīḥ by Mullā ʿAlī al-Qārī

Abstract

The Seerah of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is a comprehensive source of guidance for every aspect of human life. One of its profound and significant aspects is, spiritual dimension, encompassing themes such as divine gnosis, servitude to Allah, piety, divine love, purification of the soul, spiritual seclusion, purity of the heart, proximity to Allah, and spiritual perfection. herean analytical examination of the Sufi dimensions of the Seerah of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ in the light of Mulla Ali al-Qari’s renowned commentary, Mirqat al-Mafatih Sharh Mishkat al-Masabih. Mulla Ali al-Qari regards the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ as the supreme embodiment of divine gnosis, piety, perfect servitude, and divine belovedness. According to him(Mulla Ali al-Qari) the true source of Prophetic sovereignty lies in the perfection of servitude to Allah, while the station of divine belovedness represents the highest degree of proximity to Allah. Likewise, in his discussions of Prophetic seclusion , Shaqq al-Sadr, the Mi‘raj,Fana’ wa Baqa, and continuous fasting (Sawm al-Wisal),Mulla Ali al-Qari highlights profound spiritual meanings and their role in spiritual cultivation. The fundamental finding of this research is that the concept of the sufi Seerah  writing in Mirqat al-Mafatih is not detached from the Shari‘ah; rather, it is founded upon the interrelationship between following the Prophet ﷺ, purification of the soul, and divine gnosis. Thus, this commentary serves as an important scholarly source for understanding the spiritual and transformative dimensions of the Seerah of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.
