Application of Al-Wujūh Wa Naẓāʾir in Tafsir Al-Baḥr Ul-Muḥīṭ by Abu Hayyan Al-Andalusi

Abstract

This study investigates the Observation and application of Wujūh wa Naẓāʾir (Qur’anic polysemy) in Abu Hayyan al-Andalusi’s exegesis, Al-Baḥr al-Muḥīṭ. It explores how Abu Hayyan utilized his expertise in linguistics, grammar, and rhetoric to navigate semantic variations and contextual indicators within the Qur’anic text.

 By analyzing his methodological treatment of lexical multiplicity and comparing it with earlier works, the research demonstrates how he integrated this science into his exegetical practice—even where not explicitly categorized as such. The findings reveal that Abu Hayyan’s approach relies heavily on syntactic context and linguistic precision, significantly contributing to the development of Qur’anic semantic studies.
