Abstract

Pakistan, as an ideological state, is bound by Islamic principles in formulating its foreign policy. This research paper examines the diplomatic letters and foreign policy principles of the era of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) in the context of modern international relations. The main source of this research is the letters that the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) sent to Heraclius (Rome), Chosroes (Iran), Muqawqis (Egypt) and Negus (Ethiopia). It is made clear in the paper that the letters of the Prophet (peace be upon him) were not limited to religious invitations but also laid down the principles of state sovereignty, diplomatic immunity and international peace. The conclusions drawn from the research are that Pakistan should adopt a combination of "wisdom" and "national dignity" instead of an apologetic attitude to face the current political challenges. Also, academic competence and responsiveness should be given priority in the selection of ambassadors. This paper suggests that the axis of Pakistan's foreign policy should be "peace for the world" and "unity of the Ummah" as was the hallmark of the state of Medina.
