Abstract

In the Holy Qur’an, Qamar (the Moon) is presented as a significant cosmic and spiritual symbol. It is mentioned in various verses where it serves as a sign of divine power, a means of determining time and Islamic rituals, a source of light and guidance, and a sign of the Day of Judgment. Renowned exegetes such as Al-Tabari, Ibn Kathir, Al-Razi, Al-Qurtubi, and Al-Alusi have interpreted the moon from multiple perspectives. However, a comprehensive and comparative study of these exegetical views remains relatively scarce. This research highlights the linguistic, terminological, astronomical, and spiritual aspects of Qamar in light of classical Qur’anic commentaries. The study concludes that in the Qur’an, the moon is not merely an astronomical body but a transcendent and symbolic reality that plays a central role in the religious, social, and cosmic order of human life.
