Abstract

The Constitution of Medina represents the earliest written framework for ensuring social harmony, justice, and coexistence within a pluralistic society. This scholarly study explores the enduring principles of peace enshrined in the Charter of Medina and their relevance to modern constitutional and societal contexts. The paper examines key articles of the Charter, highlighting their role in establishing equality among all citizens regardless of religion or tribe, promoting collective responsibility, protecting human life and dignity, and ensuring loyalty to mutual agreements. It underscores the Prophet Muhammad’s ﷺ vision of an inclusive community based on citizenship and moral accountability, where Muslims and non-Muslims alike shared rights, duties, and defense responsibilities. Furthermore, the study analyzes the Charter’s mechanisms for conflict resolution, protection of human rights, and the rule of law, demonstrating its role as a foundational model for contemporary peacebuilding and constitutional governance. By linking historical insights to modern-day challenges, this research affirms that the principles of the Constitution of Medina remain a timeless guide for achieving sustainable peace and social cohesion.
