Abstract
Dar Al-Shorouk (Arabic: دار الشروق) is a renowned Arabic publishing house with headquarters in Cairo, Egypt, and Beirut, Lebanon. It publishes a wide range of genres including biographies, politics, history, philosophy, literature, social sciences, religion, nationalist thought, memoirs, languages, and the arts, along with a rich collection of children’s books. It is recognized as one of the most prominent and influential publishing houses in the Arab world.
Founded in 1968 by Abdel Hamid Al-Muallem (1918–1994), in partnership with his son Mohammad Al-Muallem, Dar Al-Shorouk was the culmination of a publishing journey that began in 1940. Its early legacy includes the publication of a science book by physicist Ali Mustafa Musharraf in 1966, prior to the company’s nationalization.
The establishment was guided by a distinguished founding committee comprising Amira Abu Al-Majd, General Director of Publications; Adel Sadr Al-Muallem, President of the Children’s Book Department; Ahmed Ezz Ziyadi, Vice President; and Hilmi Toni, Head of Artistic Direction.
Dar Al-Shorouk employs approximately 1,200 individuals, including parliamentarians, editors, artists, administrators, and workers. With a vast distribution network and offices in both Beirut and Cairo, the publishing house maintains a strong global presence.
Additionally, Maktaba Dar Al-Shorouk (translated as The Library of the House of Light) in Beirut stands as a distinguished Lebanese institution specializing in classical Arabic literature, Islamic studies, historical texts, and academic research. Dedicated to preserving and disseminating the Islamic and Arab intellectual heritage, it offers an extensive catalog of works including Quranic commentaries, Hadith collections, historical biographies, and treatises on Arabic grammar, linguistics, and philosophy. Through its scholarly contributions, Maktaba Dar Al-Shorouk has played a pivotal role in advancing academic and cultural dialogue throughout the Arab world.
