Foreign Policy during the Prophetic Era for Military Strategy: An Analytical Study of the International Perspective of Seerah al-Tayyibah

Abstract

The Seerah of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is not merely a source of spiritual guidance and moral refinement but also a comprehensive and multidimensional charter for governance, political wisdom, and foreign relations. When the first Islamic state was established in Madinah, the Prophet ﷺ demonstrated remarkable foresight on both internal and external fronts, ensuring the security of the nascent community despite limited economic and military resources. His diplomatic engagement with rulers like Negus of Abyssinia, peace treaties with adversaries such as the Quraysh, alliances with regional tribes, and letters sent to emperors represent a balanced and visionary model of external strategy that harmonized Islamic military conduct with wisdom and diplomacy.

The distinguishing feature of the Prophet’s foreign policy lies in its balance, moral integrity, and strategic prudence. International relations were never built on mere interests but were founded on justice, loyalty, and rational deliberation. The Charter of Madinah stands as a historical framework for collective security and coexistence among diverse religious and political communities. Within this model, warfare remained the last resort—peace, wisdom, and gradual strategy were the foremost priorities. At every stage of the Seerah, we witness a leadership that neither abuses power nor succumbs to weakness, but exercises strength with responsibility and insight.

In today’s global order—where the Muslim world faces intellectual, ideological, and defensive challenges—the Prophetic model of foreign policy offers a framework for developing a balanced and dignified strategic vision. This study connects the foreign relations of the Prophet ﷺ with modern statecraft, presenting a conceptual blueprint for internal unity, external dignity, and global moral leadership. It serves not only as an academic reflection but also as a practical foundation for contemporary policy formulation inspired by the Prophetic paradigm.
