A Critical Study of Prophetic Voluntary Simplicity and Modern Consumerism

Abstract

This study explores the concept of voluntary simplicity in the life of the Holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and critically examines its relevance in contrast to modern consumerism. The Prophet ﷺ demonstrated a deliberate and conscious lifestyle of simplicity, moderation and detachment from excessive material possessions despite having access to wealth and authority. His life reflects a moral and spiritual framework that emphasizes contentment, gratitude, humility and social responsibility. In contrast, modern consumerism is characterized by continuous consumption, material competition and the creation of artificial desires through advertising and capitalist economic structures. This ideology has significantly contributed to psychological stress, social inequality, environmental degradation and spiritual dissatisfaction in contemporary societies. The study highlights how consumer culture transforms human identity and happiness into material accumulation, leading to emotional instability and ethical decline. By analyzing Prophetic teachings alongside modern economic and cultural trends, the paper argues that voluntary simplicity offers a sustainable ethical alternative to consumer-driven lifestyles. The Prophet’s ﷺ model promotes balanced economic behavior, social justice, environmental responsibility and inner spiritual peace. It discourages extravagance, wastefulness and excessive attachment to worldly possessions while encouraging generosity and compassion toward the poor. The research concludes that the Prophetic philosophy of simplicity is not merely a historical practice but a universal ethical system with practical relevance for addressing modern global challenges. It provides meaningful guidance for achieving psychological well-being, social harmony and sustainable living in an increasingly materialistic world.
