Abstract

This paper explores the nature, structure, and religious as well as societal implications of Electronic Cigarettes (commonly known as E-Cigarettes or Vapes). E-Cigarettes are battery-powered devices designed as an alternative to traditional tobacco smoking. They consist of three main components: a battery, an atomizer (heating element), and a cartridge containing nicotine, glycerin, and various flavored chemicals.

Islamic jurisprudence classifies the ruling on E-Cigarettes based on their contents and effects: if they contain intoxicants or produce harmful odors, their use is either prohibited (haram) or discouraged (makruh). Even if devoid of intoxicants, their permissibility (mubah) is questioned due to their harmful health effects and potential to lead to sin and addiction.

E-Cigarettes are linked to several negative consequences, including addiction to nicotine, harmful impact on human health (lungs, heart, brain), a gateway to substance abuse, promotion of immorality through mixed-gender vape lounges, and increasing usage among students leading to social degradation. Furthermore, spending money on such unproductive and potentially damaging habits is discouraged in Islam.

This paper concludes that while E-Cigarettes may appear less harmful than traditional smoking, they pose significant physical, spiritual, and societal risks. Thus, from an Islamic and rational perspective, abstaining from their use is the safest and most commendable approach.
