Abstract

This paper explores the theme of social complaint in contemporary Arabic poetry, highlighting how poets articulate collective grievances, social injustices, and cultural disillusionment in the modern Arab world. In response to political repression, economic inequality, and identity crises, contemporary Arab poets have increasingly used verse as a medium for social resistance and moral commentary. Through a critical examination of selected works by prominent modern poets—including Mahmoud Darwish, Nizar Qabbani, and Adonis—this study investigates how poetic expression serves as both a mirror and a critique of societal realities. The analysis reveals a shift from traditional poetic forms to more experimental and free-verse structures, reflecting the urgency and fragmentation of modern social experiences. By contextualizing poetic narratives within broader socio-political frameworks, the paper underscores the evolving role of poetry as a platform for dissent and transformation in Arab societies. Ultimately, it argues that social complaint in contemporary Arabic poetry is not merely a reflection of discontent but a catalyst for cultural awareness and potential reform.
